Maladie - S/T

Hello. First off, apologies for my disappearance (if any of you actually care). Second...well, there really isn't a second part. I guess I'm just sorry for the lack of posts. Anyway, on to today's feature presentation.

Maladie are a screamo/hardcore punk band from Tijuana, Mexico. They released their self-titled LP back in '09. Don't let them being a screamo act turn you off, they're really not like Atreyu or *insert whiny screamo band here*. I like Maladie because they mix all that raw energy and intensity of hardcore punk with melody and let's face it, we all appreciate a little melody every now and then. The downside here is that the songs are all in Spanish and aside from "Hola!" and "Que pasa?", my Spanish sucks. Hell, it's non-existent. Since I'm a sucker for lyrics (especially with hardcore bands), I couldn't appreciate this band as much as I could've but I still enjoyed the hell out of this record. It's energetic from start to finish and doesn't get boring at all. Highly recommended.

No Friends

No Friends are a hardcore band without all the recent gimmicks: breakdowns, tough guy attitude etc. They play straight up hardcore that harkens back to the style of the "good ol' days". Bands like Gorilla Biscuits come to mind...

Anyway, the vocalist of No Friends also does vocal duties with Municipal Waste and that's one of the reasons why I like this band so much. The old school thrashy vocals with melodic hardcore punk. Check em out.

ampere- the first five years

I must say, I'm really settling in nicely with the whole "intelligent" segment of bands within hardcore. First, Dangers, then Orchid, now Ampere. Might seem like it undermines the whole punk mentality, but really, fuck it, I love when one's aesthetic side merges with the intellectual side. Brilliant.

(I really don't want to engage in semantics here, but methinks the prog-rock tag doesn't really apply here, or at least not in the way it would to Gospel.)

Dangers

There once lived an author by the name of Richard Brautigan who wrote a lot of books during the wonderful beat movement. Being a depressive, one day he shot himself in the solitude of his own house, only to be remembered and found 2 months later, where police found a letter saying "Messy, isn't it", next to his disemboweled body.

So, hardcore for the book-reader, this is. Absolutely fantastic lyrics. Here's one such example, title probably inspired by Mitch Hedberg's famous line:

I was supposed to see these guys play with Mammoth Grinder in Brooklyn on the 15th but they called it quits some time ago. Very sad, especially since they've quickly become one of my favourite hardcore [punk] bands.

Straight-edge thrashcore/powerviolence/whatever you want to call it from the San Fransisco bay area. They had a sound which differed from many of their peers, which seemed to take a lot of qualities from old-school hardcore, creating fast, fun and positive music with a message. This message dealt with everything from skateboarding, the love of coffee and life as a nerd, to the lack of substance and political awareness in hardcore today.

Finally got around to upping this beautiful release. Cursed are/were a crust/hardcore band from Canada that broke up in 2008 which is really upsetting (not that I was gonna be able to see them). Anyway, they released some great records, my favourite being One. If the opening track "Polygraph" doesn't do it for you, then leave the hall. This stuff is fast and angry. What more could you want?

Punk Megapost....

...because you deserve it. I've been pretty inactive the last few days due to my external exams, but now that I'm done with them, I can give all 2 or 3 of you that happened to stumble upon our blog my full and undivided attention. First up, a "technical punk" band that I just only recently heard about. Nomeansno and their incredibly awesome album "Wrong". Wrong is widely considered the band's best and most representative record. The playing is incredibly skilled, with the Wright brothers(who founded the band as a 2-piece in their parent's basement) effortlessly shifting tempos and time signatures and Kerr's(vocalist 1984-circa 1990) razor sharp lyrics clicking right into place. Anyway, download, listen, buy, enjoy.

Next up, we have The Broadways. The Broadways were a punk band from Chicago, Illinois. The group formed in 1996 after the break-up of ska-punk band Slapstick, with their vocalist Brendan Kelly and trumpet player Dan Hanaway combining with Rob DePaola and Tricky Dick guitarist Chris McCaughan.

Musically, The Broadways frequently drew comparisons to Crimpshrine and Jawbreaker. The band is notable for the intelligent political, social, and introspective nature of their lyrics, as well as their complex, non-traditional song structures and above-average punk musicianship. The band released Broken Star in 1998 on Asian Man Records before breaking up the same year.
