kickball-ABCDEFGHIJKickball

Every single review of this band seems to include the word "awkward" at least half a dozen times. From my perspective ( the non-show goers perspective:( ), this doesn't seem like an altogether just description, again judging by only the album. However, to claim that there is no such element present would be a lie.

Think of this as a cross between Algernon and Minus The Bear.

First track is sooooooo fucking good

I've yet to listen to this new release due to school-work, will probably post up a proper review upon playing it through later on this week. In the meantime, enjoy

toe- for long after tomorrow

Here is toe, a mathy/post-rock band from japan with a relatively fast-paced sound that for some reason seems to me to be a blend of russian circles and mouse on the keys. Tbh, I don't crazy for too many post-rock bands, but these guys have something going on here. Acoustic guitar, vibraphone, keyboards, bass and drums all mixed into one big, awesome stew. I can see myself enjoying the shit out of this thoughout the coming week.

maserati-passages

Greetings once again, ladies and lads, I present to you a very recent discovery of mine, the music of maserati. Post-rock with a dash of psych-rock and math-rock and prog.

math rock week:day 7

FUCK! Finally. I've been listening to more math-rock than I'd like to this past week, so you better be grateful. So much more new albums have popped under my radar but I didn't want to jeopardize the whole notion of a "math-rock week". So, stay tuned, lots of awesome recs to come.

Anyways, Dillinger Escape Plan, Under The Running Board, okay-ish (IMO) math-rock, blablabla enjoy. link

math rock week:day 6

Hi again, day 6 of the math rock week. After browsing my music library for some time, I decided to post a release by a band called Ahleuchatistas. Very eccentric twists and turns, changes in tempo and general mindfuckery. Not too shabby.

math rock week:day 5

Day 5: Here we have Upsilon Acrux, a band who's music is often defined as "brutal prog". Upsilon Acrux are sure to create material that is entirely unconventional, consistently superb, intelligent, rhythmically labyrinthine, and largely alien even to the more experimental and outgoing bands around these days. A must have for fans of the genre, IMHO.

math rock week:day 4

Day 4 of the math rock week. Going to make this post brief, since I really can't emphasize the brilliance of this record. I'll let last.fm take over.
Off Minor- The Heat Death Of The Universe
catch

"3/5ths of the New York screamo band Saetia formed Off Minor after Saetia broke up in 1999. The line-up consists of Steve Roche on drums, Jamie Behar on guitar, and Kevin Roche on bass. Perhaps what makes Off Minor so special is how much noise they are able to get out of 3 instruments, whether it be in the form of chaos or beauty. Combining both in the same way Saetia did, Off Minor represents the true emo scene, a difficult blend of elegance and brutality that when meshed together forms something truly amazing."

math rock week:day 3

Hella-Hold your horse is
link

Hella. Whoa. Mind-blowing stuff. The drums especially. Not only does this guy know how to play his instrument, but he also somehow manages to lead the whole damn song with him. It sounds like the song carries along not according to changes in tempo, pitch, or time signatures. No, the song changes however the fuck the drummer wants it to change. I really can't describe it anymore, he leads but he supports and provides a foundation as well. Might as well take away all other instruments. I'm well into my 10th time listening to this album and I still find it hard to keep up with the damn drums.

math rock week:day 2

School's out! Congratulate me, for I have un-officialy graduated from high school. I find that the summer holidays are a great time to catch up on whatever projects one might have started during the year, or possibly start new ones. Anyhoo, now that I'm stocked up with most of Aldous Huxley's books, these holidays might actually turn out to be somewhat constructive. Maybe I'll start delving deeper into a musical genre presently unknown to me. Fucking finally.
Giraffes?Giraffes!-More Skin With Milk-Mouth
buy
yalla

Anyways, fulfilling my promise of a weeks worth of math-rock, i present to you,Giraffes?Giraffes!. Hailing from Massachusetts, these guys are a 2-piece band that pull of quite intense and complicated songs. They can both play guitar and the drums, so it seems that they alternate between songs. Contrary to most math-rock bands, the bass has been substituted for tapping, which produces quite the fucking awesome effect. This band deserves all the recognition they can get, because quite frankly, musicians don't get much better than this.

math rock week:day 1

Tera Melos-s/t
go

Just got back from one of the most kick-ass gigs our little local scene has seen. So I've decided that this week I'll be posting only mathrock, due to my sudden interest in the genre. An album a day.I also reckon that these bands are a good start for anyone geting into mathrock. Kicking off this thread of posts is Tera Melos. imo, probably the most influental and forward-thinking bands of this genre.
